KOOTHAMBALAM

Koothambalam is a traditional theatre for staging the ancient dramatic artforms of Kerala like Koothu, Koodiyattam and Kathakali. Usually, Koothambalams are constructed within the premises of temples strictly adhering to the guidelines enumerated in the Natyasasthra of Bharatha Muni.

In Kerala, there are fourteen Koothambalams at present of these, twelve are within the temple premises and two outside temple precincts. All these rectangular in shape.

It has been decided to build a Koothambalam away from the traditional context ie outside the temple premises on the bank of the river Pampa at Ayroor Kathakali Gramam in Pathanamthitta District of Kerala State. A budget outlay of Rs. 2 crore is required to build up a full – fledged theatre as prescribed in the Natyasasthra.

It is, therefore, fervently appealed to all connoisseurs and enthusiasts of the traditional art forms of Kerala to generously donate to the Koothambalam Construction Fund floated by the Pathanamthitta District Kathakali Club for the said venture.
